About the ECC Garden

EARLY CHILDHOOD CENTER GARDEN

During the cold of the winter of 2009-10, a team of 5 ECC teachers along with ECC Director Noreen DeYoung participated in a training program with Growing Hope, an Ypsilanti non-profit that promotes community gardening.  After completing the program,  the team shared their vision for the role of gardening at the ECC with the entire staff.  That vision includes a change in the physical layout of the garden, as well as integration of gardening with even more parts of the Jewish year. During the fall of 2009, we were able to use the product of our garden to decorate our Sukkah.  In the coming years, we hope to use something from our garden to create an agricultural connection to all of our celebrations, from fresh spices at Havdalah, to latkes made from potatoes grown in our garden, to maror made from horseradish cultivated on our playground.

Each month, we will use this blog to provide a garden update.  During planting season there will often be more than one post per week.  Check back often!
